A burning performance by Ellie Goulding was just what was
needed for the cold March night.
The Capital FM arena proved quite the contrast to her usual
gigs, with her entertaining thousands rather than hundreds.
Goulding managed to pull it off though, managing to get them
all up on their feet for her club bangers, Burn and Anything Could Happen.
There were nice little touches to her earlier days, with a
mash up of ‘Salt Skin’, ‘Everytime You Go’ and ‘This Love (Will Be Your
Downfall)’. Of course, she did Starry Eyed, her first real hit which
prompted a sea of screams.
It was the perfect mix of her old and new material, with
plenty of songs from her debut ‘Lights’ and ‘Halcyon’.
There were even a couple of covers too, including Alt-J’s
‘Tesselate’ and James Blake’s ‘Life Round Here.’ And how could anyone forget
‘Your Song’, an absolute perfect rendition of Elton John’s classic.
The highlight of the night, as always with Goulding, is when
she pulls out her acoustic guitar. Playing songs such as, ‘Guns and Horses’, ‘The Writer’ and
‘How Long Will I Love You’, it showed her origins off well, sat on a stage with
just her and her guitar.
Of course, there could have been a few more of her older
songs, but her new songs are just as good that it didn’t really matter.
Her modesty with her dancing as she said ‘I can’t dance’ was
laughable as she pranced around the stage in her usual cute, quirky way. I'm sure the front few rows enjoyed her aggressively grinding at them. A surprisingly relaxed Ellie managed to show remarkable energy, covering all the stage by leaping up and down like a bunny on speed.
Overall, a great first Arena tour for Ellie, she managed to
rock the place, but, since it’s a limited run you may have to catch her when
she next comes round.
9/10
