Orange is the New Black Season 1 | TV Review

Netflix hit gold right here with it’s original series, Orange is the New Black. Set in a federal prison, OITNB follows the adventure of middle class Piper Chapman as she enters a prison full of a strange mix of characters.

Based on a memoir by Piper Kerman, the show is filled with gripping storylines and very obvious prison stereotypes. This is pretty standard for a comedy drama such as this, so the stereotypes do help the overall feel of the show.

As she enters the prison, she soon discovers her former girlfriend who helped her commit the crime she was put in there in the first place for is stuck in there with her, which leads on to even more obvious prison stereotypes.

But one of the greatest moments with OITNB is their ability to transform the inmates’ archetypes, and give each and every inmate their own backstory and twisting them into real people.

Having Piper’s conflict with her ex-girlfriend along with the thrilling story lines as the story looks back at how the other inmates ended up in prison makes the show one of the most unique around.

If you can overlook the blatant woman prison labels, you are in for thirteen hours of great TV. And with the next series hitting Netflix on June 6th, you won’t have to wait long to get your next Orange is the New Black fix.
