Every
classic album starts with an orgasm. Said no one ever.
The
second album from Taylor Momsen and her rock dudes, I mean The Pretty Reckless,
has plenty of repetitive guitar riffs, religious undertones and just sex. If
she spent less time forgiving ‘Father’ for her sins and more time thinking up
some more creative guitar riffs, there could have been a decent album here.
At
least their first album ‘Light Me Up’ had a couple of songs that you could listen
to more than once, and actually tell them apart. One
of the more bearable songs on the album has to be ‘Heaven Knows’ since it’s
simply less annoying than the others, and gives some variety.
The
acoustic songs from the album, like ‘House On a Hill’ are just downright
depressing. With jumbled, random lyrics to try and form some form of meaning,
it’s a bit of a pathetic attempt. It
must be said though; their song writing has evolved since ‘Light Me Up’, even
if still a bit dire in places. ‘Absolution’ does show a more grown-up side to
Momsen’s sound.
But
for a rock album, you can’t go wrong right here if you need a bit of a
depressing personal mosh pit.
Just
because you’ve got some panda eyes and a lack of clothes, Taylor, does
not mean you are a sinner. Just calm down, have a cup of tea, and wait for this
sinner phase to blow over.
