Assassin's Creed Returns

The next Assassin’s Creed game in the long-running franchise has just been announced. Here’s a sneak peak in case you haven’t checked it out yet.

It’s set in France which has been rumoured to be one of the locations of an AC game for quite a while. Being able to scale the Eiffel Tower does sound so tempting. Only coming to next-gen consoles and the PC, will it be one of the best AC games yet? Here’s a rundown of FourPlay’s top 5 Assassin’s Creed games.

5. Assassin's Creed III
The introduction of a vast open world to explore filled with wildlife and varying environments. It follows the story of Conner or Ratonhnhaké:ton as he fights the Templar’s over control of the colonies. New gameplay was a bit glitchy, especially the combat, and Connor himself lacked much in the way of character. But naval combat did pioneer a different aspect to the AC series.

4. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
One of the sequels to AC II didn’t add much to II, but it did bring in some new features. One in particular was the ability to be able to call in trainee assassins from the Brotherhood, which made missions a lot less challenging. The setting is very attractive too, since it’s set in Rome, which gives you so many landmarks to climb.

3. Assassin's Creed
The opening game to the Assassins Creed franchise explores Altair’s memories in the time of the third crusade. Assassinating Templar’s left right and centre, this game ushered in the generation of a very successful series. Although some of the quests were mind numbingly boring (eavesdropping), the overall story introduced a whole new way of story-telling in games.

2. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
Edward Kenway the pirate, not assassin. This gave the game a whole new outlook, and with that, making it a lot more fun than III. Also, it brought back the old combat system, which makes it a lot smoother to play. Black Flag brings the previous naval combat to a whole new level and gives a lot of islands and shipwrecks to explore. The story is a bit bland compared to how exciting all the side missions and exploration is. But overall, it revitalised the AC franchise with plenty of new features.

1. Assassin's Creed II
The opening game of Ezio Auditore added so much more to the franchise from the first game. With an emotional start triggering one of the best stories in gaming, Ezio’s adventure takes him across Italy, with Venice and Florence in the picture (a very pretty picture at that.) Improved gameplay and a different range of weapons made it one of the most ambitious and best games around at the time, and it’s still is.
