Metallica- The Lords of Summer | Single Review

Last night Metallica debuted their new song currently entitled "The Lords Of Summer" at their show in Colombia. They announced that they had a new song planned for their "Metallica By Request" tour, in which the fans get to choose what songs the band plays from their entire back catalogue.

Many Metallica fans were eagerly waiting with anticipation to hear The Lords Of Summer being played for the first time. As with every new Metallica release there are always mixed views, with most people complaining about the band maturing since the 1980's. However it has certainly worked in their favour with this new track as it combines all the elements in which they are notorious for. The Lords Of Summer has traits of Metallica's oldest album, such as the speed and dare I say "Thrash-iness"that resembles 'Kill 'em All'. Drummer Lars Ulrich is often criticised for his lack of creativity and pace when playing, but he can shrug off any suggestions of him falling off because his playing has improved tenfold with the new song. He even uses the double bass pedal again!

The main thing that excites me more than anything about TLOS is how much the riffs sound like they came directly from "...And Justice For All' which is arguably their best album to date. Metallica have studied themselves and combined the best parts of their career into this one song. Singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield is in fine form for this performance and his voice sounds the best it has in years.

The only criticism I have at the moment is that it is a little too stretched out and it feels like they're playing riffs for the sake of it towards the end. Also it would be nice to hear more creativity and innovative playing from lead guitarist Kirk Hammett.

Overall The Lords Of Summer is a great song which can be proudly added to the roster of the greatest metal band of all time, and hopefully it will not be augmented too much when put onto the album next year.
