Guardians Of The Galaxy | Movie Review

Want a surreal sci-fi adventure with a cyborg raccoon and talking tree? You’ve got it right here with Guardians of the Galaxy! With an insane mix of comedy, action and emotion, this is undoubtedly one of the best Marvel movies to date. If you can find a superhero film, albeit, any film that can make you cry in the first five minutes, then have you bawling with laughter in the next five minutes, please point that out to me.

Due to the mysterious nature of the Guardians of the Galaxy crew, with Star Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon and Groot, fans were apprehensive as to how the miracle makers that are Marvel would pull a film like this off. But they’ve done it, and exceeded all expectations.  The beauty of this film is that no-one had heard of the Guardians beforehand, apart from the hardcore comic book fans. They didn’t need to follow on from any previous Marvel films, as opposed to others like the Avengers. It was pretty much a fresh start, and they sure used this creative freedom to their advantage.

The emotion is spared in most parts of the film, but when it does hit, it strikes hard. But luckily is usually supported with some comic relief to turn those tears of sadness into laughter. And the action, thanks to the sci-fi nature of the film is both visually striking, and a lot of fun to watch.

Chris Pratt as Star Lord is an absolutely perfect fit. There surely couldn’t have been a better choice. His way of portraying the cockiness and pure comedy in his character is flawless. And having Vin Diesel as Groot who can only say three words throughout the film is good too. The sarcasm shown in Rocket Raccoon by Bradley Cooper is amazing as well considering he’s a cyborg raccoon. The entire crew are very well suited into their roles. The chemistry between the Guardians makes up for the rather flat, unexciting villains, Nebula and Ronan. And Pratt’s previous comedy experience really brings a special kind of charm to the entire film. So it’s not just a comic book film.

If you’re worried you won’t understand the film, never fear. It’s a film for both comic book fans and your average cinemagoer alike, which is the attraction behind this movie, which other comic book films cannot boast. For comic book fans, it’ll be very intriguing as to where the Guardians will fit into the Avengers in later films. It’ll definitely be the movie of the summer, however odd the film actually is, it’s charming, and one of the funniest films of the year.

10/10
(seriously go see it.)
