The Inbetweeners 2 | Movie Review

When people hear the word "sequel" they tend to cringe, especially with films. Numerous questions race through their heads; questions like "Will it be as good as the original?" and "Will the legacy be tarnished?" Well, The Inbetweeners' new film is no exception and there was a lot of speculation surrounding it. However, I am here to put your minds to rest.

The Inbetweeners 2 smashed box office records by becoming the highest grossing UK film this year so far, and that feat certainly can be justified. For those who somehow haven't seen the hundreds of trailers for the film, the four lads end up Down Under to visit Jay on his gap year after Will, Simon and Neil are struggling to enjoy life in the UK. Will hasn't got to grips with the university experience and is still being ridiculed by everyone he meets, Simon's being tortured by psycho girlfriend Lucy and Neil just enjoys the fresh air. With our favourite foursome reunited, we enjoy their antics in Oz.

Without spoiling too much, the film is absolutely hilarious, even funnier than the first movie. It doesn't seem as if the writers have recycled old material and the jokes are mostly clever and original, albeit somewhat childish, but that's what we love about The Inbetweeners. For me, Neil gets man of the match for making me cry with laughter about 12 times throughout the epic film. Will was also on top form and his singing round the campfire was ... inspiring, but I won't say any more about that.

As amazing as the film was, I have a couple of criticisms. Firstly I felt that Simon was too filled with anger in this movie and his character was nowhere near as humorous as usual. Another qualm I had was that the storyline seemed to dwindle towards the end and the climax of the film wasn't as explosive as it could have been. The side characters were enjoyable to watch but they didn't compete in the slightest with the main cast.

Whether you've been a fan of the franchise from the very beginning or you're just looking for a decent comedy with a few (thousand) poop and sex jokes, then this is the film for you. It is certain to cheer you up and have you re-watching the old episodes and film on repeat until the DVD is released. Top bants.
