The song itself is ambitious right from the get-go. It explores a slightly heavier side to The Darkness, one which polarises their original, cheesy sound. They no longer appear a parody act from the second the crushing and catchy guitar riff kicks in. However we soon rediscover The Darkness' quirky side when the chorus starts. There's a chant of "barbarian" followed by a howl which resembles a cat being stepped on. It's awkward but so incredibly enthralling. The highlight of the song has to be the guitar solo, which demonstrates frontman/guitarist Justin Hawkins undeniable talent.
The video is creative and takes us on a comic-like journey through the band's barbarian voyage. The concept of the track is intriguing but if you are a casual fan of the band then it will be difficult to get into. This is not at all a song for those who only like I Believe In A Thing Called Love. Barbarian will definitely leave fans feeling confused, yet fascinated to hear what the rest of the new album brings.
