Big Hero 6 | Movie Review

Disney's newest animated adventure film, Big Hero 6, is one of those movies that grips you no matter what age you are. Its stunning visuals, quirky characters and enthralling plot give the film such depth that any person of any age would be engrossed in this film from start to finish.

Centralizing around Hiro, a 14 year old engineering prodigy, his story begins with an illegal robot fight in downtown San Fransokyo (Love the name). Using his age to fool his opponents he outwits his competition with ease. But it soon becomes clear Hiro was meant for far greater things than duping unsuspecting competitors. After seeing his brother's creation Baymax, the huggable non-threatening health care assistant, he wants to follow in his footsteps. Of course it doesn't quite pan out the way he hopes but hey this is a Disney movie what did you expect?

What I really enjoyed was seeing the Marvel interpretation unfold throughout the film. Karate fighting robots, a mysteriously masked villain and a troop of kick ass crime fighting hero's with strange nicknames. It had it all. Even a cameo from Stan Lee himself if you stick around long enough after the credits. To me, this is a welcomed spin on the usual bog-standard plot-lines. It's not focused around falling in love or magic. Instead it tackles much more mature themes such as loss and redemption. Yet it still has the whimsy and action provided by the colourful cast of characters to keep all ages entertained.

By far the most engrossing feature of the film was the comedy provided by this robot and child duo. Whether it was watching Baymax awkwardly shuffle around his surroundings or his well timed "Oh no's" in the most suspenseful situations I found myself laughing a lot more than anticipated. What was even more surprising is how emotionally attached I became to this inflatable robot. Baymax's one true motive was to help anyone who needed it and the more you watch him interact with the characters the more endearing he becomes.

When it comes to Big Hero 6, expect the unexpected. It's not all cartoon shenanigans and well timed slapstick. The emotive scenes interspersed amongst the film genuinely brought me to tears. The vivid and rich backdrops made me forget it was an animation. The voice-acting is so on point it made the characters jump off the screen. Big Hero 6 provides that long awaited connection between animated fantasy and hard-hitting reality. All whilst being wrapped up in a beautifully produced package. So next time you go to the cinema and you want a film that you'll genuinely feel like you've gotten your money's worth, go see this.

9/10
