Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt | TV Review

It's finally worth having Netflix again! Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 1 had been on Netflix since March 6th and I've watched the series 2 and a half times. Whether its the lovable character in Kimmy Schmidt or the hilarious storylines she encounters in her day to day life, this should be in line for a binge watch.
Now without spoiling much, Kimmy had been trapped in an apocalypse bunker for fifteen years with 3 other women. After finally being found, the 'mole women' find national fame on TV. Kimmy's desire to not be in the spotlight soon leads her to New York where she tries to fit in despite having the mindset of a 90's middle schooler and having zero idea what a smartphone is.
This is the source for most of the comedy in the 13 episodes, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it comes out in the most unexpected moments and soon catches you by surprise. And the innocent vibe of Ellie Kemper (The Office & Bridesmaids) really shines through in these moments. She is the perfect fit for Kimmy and throughout she gives the best one liners and catchphrases that'll get stuck in your head like nobody's business. Don't even get me started on the title song.
There is one star performer. Tituss Burgess. As Titus. Such creativity! But his outstandingly sassy atmosphere and how relatable he is to you (you'll soon find out) makes him the standout star in the entire show. Other side characters are amazing too, with a delusional socialite and a mental landlord, could you get any more like real life? Relatability is a massive factor in the series, with so many popular culture references and things you'll recognise instantly that bring something to the comedy that other comedies fail to do.
Most of the storylines are hilarious, but a couple of them hit a bum note in parts. Usually the ones with Kimmy's romantic encounters. Still, there's not a single episode you won't end up laughing in tears at. It is a typical NBC comedy since it was tailored for that, but as a streaming series, it works even better. That'll soon mean that in season 2, they'll be able to take more risks. This can only mean that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will get better and more awkward!
8/10
